Classical Chinese Garden Planned for Washington, DC

Construction of a classical Chinese garden is planned for the US National Arboretum in Washington, DC. The garden will be a gift from the Chinese people to the American people and will symbolize friendship between the two nations. Design and construction of the garden will be a cooperative effort of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the State Forestry Administration of the People's Republic of China.

Promised to be “the finest Chinese garden outside of China” by former Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman, the site will provide a resource for study and appreciation of Chinese garden culture. The garden will feature traditional elements with all buildings and furnishings provided by the Chinese. Preliminary plans for the 12 acre garden include; a 1.3 acre lake with a traditional boathouse; a Fragrance Pavilion; a teahouse with exhibit space for Chinese artwork; and a Whispering Pavilion, which will include a Chinese white pagoda.
