Reflection and remembrance of what? Washington becoming the 42nd state of the US? (November 11,1889)(They have their own (miniature) version of Vancouver, you know...)

I've been reading Thoreau's Walden. He calls a lake the earth's eye, looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. And perhaps today, the nature of those who have gone before us.
