Andy Hill

Curator-Horticulturist, David C. Lam Asian Garden

Professional Biography

Andy Hill became Curator-Horticulturist of the David C. Lam Asian Garden in 2008. He has been with the Botanical Garden since 2001, and was responsible for developing the Carolinian Forest Garden and refurbishing the Physic Garden. Andy was born in Devon, UK and came to Canada at age eight. Generations of his family have been farmers and plants-people, and he is pleased to be able to continue in the tradition. His own interest in horticulture grew from a love of hiking, camping and the wilderness. While living in Banff he apprenticed as a gardener and as an arborist, and became increasingly fascinated in how gardens can function as public space — connecting people with the natural world. He appreciates the daily joys of working with a wonderful collection of plants and people at the beautiful UBC Botanical Garden. Following the thoughtful work of others, Andy is carefully guiding the evolution of the David C. Lam Asian Garden as a place for the whole community to use and enjoy.
