Okey doke. My first post here, and I'd like to get your expert advice with regards to id'ing a shrub that has had me perplexed. I think its either a dogwood or a viburnum of some sort, but have yet to narrow the species down. It has pink flowers and exfoliating bark, as you can see. Oh, and sorry, poor quality pics, forgive the phone! Help!
A Weigela, I believe. Not familiar enough with the group to suggest something more specific, but others here are.
Thanks...but I'm not sure which particular species this is... I've seriously been trying to figure this one out for over a year now!
Deutzia x kamliiflora looks promising...seriously this shrub has haunted me. I've actually told clients that it was a variety of mockorange. I will be going back to these clients with my tail between my legs now... Thank you!!
Welcome to the forums canadiantreeman1! My vote goes to Tyrlych... with Kolkwitzia amabilis. When in flower they look just like Abelia. Except for all the hairs behind the petals. See.... http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?star...56&tbnw=152&ndsp=17&ved=1t:429,r:11,s:99,i:41 http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?um=1...5&start=25&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:14,s:25,i:201 http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?um=1...nw=244&start=0&ndsp=8&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:73
So Deutzia is out. Just when I thought I had gotten to the bottom of this. But the leaves aren't a match, either. Deutzia seems to have finely serrated leaves. My only concern with the Kolkwitzia is that the leaves appear more elliptic than ovate. Then again that variation seems to occur within the individual itself. I like it, but is there anything else that it might be before I etch this on my forehead?
I picked up on the hairy fruit clusters also but was thinking Deutzia would have those, too. Today I remember it produces more Philadelphus-like capsules, without the fuzz. The taller, almost arborescent habit is consistent with Kolkwitzia as well.
