I purchased a male and a female kiwi plant and have planted them together with a trellis two years ago (June 2008). I have beautiful, thriving plants that get bigger each year but no fruit. Can anyone tell me how long it takes these to mature? How do I know that I really have one of each sex and not two of one? I am not seeing any flowering at all, and no leaf color changes. I was reading on them and discovered that the male plants leaves will turn a pink but I have not seen this yet. I also read itm ay take 2-3 years for them to reach maturity. I am thinking I have two of the same sex and do not know how to tell male from female. Thank you, Darlene
You can tell male/female Actinidia apart only if you have flowers, this will be easy: http://dic.academic.ru/pictures/wiki/files/65/Actinidia_chinensis_A.jpg (female flower is on the right hand side). The A.kolomikta flowers look similar. But the problem is that you are "not seeing any flowering at all"...
that is true, no flowers yet. Does it really take them 2-3 years to mature? What time of year do they blossom? We also had japanese beatles get them last year, will that prevent them or slow them from maturing? Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.
