Hello... Last fall I planted a sad little spindly Pembina Plum tree in my front yard. I was soooo worried this spring when I unwrapped the tree (from it's moose protective case :) but it has gone CRAZY with growth with our 18 hour sunny days and I don't know what to do with it! How do I prune it so it is tree-like instead of the huge bushy creature that it is today? Fall and winter is only 2- 6 weeks away and I want to train this tree so that I will eventually have some lovely plums. Any suggestions? I have a VERY brown thumb! Thanks! Katie from Alaska
Can you post a photo? And will you be putting up moose defences again? If not (if it has got too large to protect easily), I'd do no pruning at all, in case the moose do it for you too enthusiastically straight after.
Hi Katie. Here in our area ( Northern Alberta) Moose are a big problem. A strong fence with good solid posts will keep the moose from destroying the tree. This is a really good group in your region with lots of experience with fruit growing. http://www.apfga.org/index.html This will help you with pruning etc. http://www.saskfruit.com/studentwebsites/Plums Owain/ProducerWebSite/index.html Cheers and good luck Kim
