If you could only have three Acer cultivars, what would they be?? Remember - only THREE!

    My choices right now:

    A.p. 'Satsuki beni'
    A.j. 'Woods #2'
    A.s. 'Autum Moon'

    ONLY three? Impossible!

    Hmmm...

My Aratama has had stunning color since spring, so I'd put it on the list.
Orange Dream placed in just the right location for full color effects (last year mine was prettier than this year, but it got moved to less sun because of height constraints)

    Now for the final spot
It'd have to be a contest between Oshio beni, Purple Ghost, Olsen's Frosted Strawberry, and Peaches and Cream (Dark form)

I'll have to think about it.

    Um...

Depending on how they perform over time, maybe Purple Ghost or Olsen's Frosted Strawberry. My OFS looks so very promising, but it's so tiny it's hard to imagine full sized. And I love my PG, but it needs to be in the ground and settle. It looks like it probably got pushed fairly hard and some leaves show reticulation and others do not. And I haven't seen fall color in person for that tree, yet.

Oh, how could I forget my little Oki kasame? It's been a treat all year, too.

But if I could have only three, I'd want some variety. Oki kasame and Aratama would compete for the red spot. It would be a tough choice but at this point I'd have to give Aratama the nod. Orange Dream would compete with Ueno yama and Akane for the orange then yellow spot. Akane might win if I ever see one in person and if my fantasy tree doesn't end up suffering from spots like Gomero's. So at this point OD wins that one.

And the other color would be a duel between Peaches and Cream Dark Form and Olsen's Frosted Strawberry. OFS wins that one, so far based on summer leaf color. But ask me in Spring or in Fall and I might answer differently!

    Final list:
    Aratama
    Orange Dream
    Olsen's Frosted Strawberry

'Osakazuki' or 'Hogyoku', 'Junihitoe' or 'Palmatifolium' and 'Ornatum or 'Waterfall'. Maybe i can edit down to 3 tomorrow.

A.P.Seiryu (for rather special autumn colours), Shirasawanum 'Aureum' (for that almost translucent pale lemony/green leaf) and A.P.Shindeshojo (for that rather classy deep pink leaf in Spring through until about now)
Mind you, one could be tempted to add A.P. Kamagata ( a stunning little tree)

Tough choice... but so far this spring/summer I'd choose:

    A. s. 'Aureum' - agree, leaf shape and color just wonderful
    A. p. 'Tsukushi gata' - also leaf shape and color, and overall vigor
    A. p. 'Shigarami' or 'Ornatum' -can't make up my mind on that one, 'Shigarami' for a spectacular spring, 'Ornatum' for summer color.

wow is that tough. I'd probbably break it out like this:

    A.p. diss. 'Eagle Claw'
    A.p. Red Pygmy
    A.s. Aureum

I have another shirasawanum I actually like better than 'Aureum,' but I don't know what it is. It was supposed to be 'Aureum' but the leaves are smaller, less chartreuse, and it is a bit faster growing. I love the shirasawanum leaf shape, and it's even more rainbow hued in the fall. No idea what it is though.

    This is a popular thread that pops up periodically in the different maple forums: which are your 3, 5 ,... favorite maples?;
For me it is quite difficult to answer since it depends on the time of the year. Thus if the 'thread owner' does not mind ;-)), I'd rather answer the question: which is (are) your favorite maple(s) each month of the year?

    - December: A. tegmentosum, its beautiful bark does not need freezing temperatures to color;
    - January: A. palmatum 'Bi hoo' and the pectinatum selections (Mozart, Sirene,..)
    - February: Must be 'Sango kaku' et al. (Winter flame, Fjellheim, Beni kawa,.....). In my garden they are at the top of their redness at this time.
    - March: Katsura and Wilson Pink Dwarf, they leaf out before all others
    - April : Any in the corallinum group: 'Beni maiko', 'Shin deshojo', 'Otome zakura',....
    - May: Can't choose, they are all beautiful ;-))
    - June: Must be one of the dissectums ('Emma' is one of my favorites)
    - July: Shirasawanum 'Jordan', outstanding in full, hot sun.
    - August: One of the red leaved selections which does not green out. I like 'Margaret Bee'
    - September: Rubescens 'Red Flamingo', it keeps a very good shape, adding color to the garden at this tough time where many of the other maples look as if they had been through the battle of Normandy.
    - October: Japonicums turn color. I like 'Fairy Lights'
    - November: For the reds 'Osakazuki', for the yellows capadocicum 'Aureum'

The inherent injustice of this question is highlighted by the omission of ukigumo thus far :)

in the spirit of gomero's broadening the scope of the list, how about these?

    leaf shape: A.s aureum

    variegation: kasagi yama

    bark: a conspicuum phoenix

    flowers: A.j. Aconitifolium

    form: kiyohime

    up close: beni schischihenge

    from a distance: Ukigumo

    full sun: trompenburg

    spring show: aka shigitatsu sawa

    fall show: A.s. aureum

i have failed to find spots for mikawa yatsubusa, katsura, sister ghost or oregon sunset, all favorites ...

    ........

maybe there was a point to limiting it to three choices!

Ahh-haaa!! I see you could NOT keep the selection to three!! That was actually the point of the thread - its almost impossible to limit your choices to three. We each fall in love with these beautiful plants in all their woundrous variety, and this makes it nearly impossible to choose a few "favorites". They ALL become favorites at some point, do they not? Or we would not have brought them home to our gardens. So yes, Gomero, there are many ways to list our favorites. I think this thread proves that the lists will be Lonnnngggg - not short! A wonderful testament to the diversity and beauty of this species! :)

So lets have your long lists. Long as you want...

A.palmatum cultivars would be 'Oshio beni', 'Seiryu', 'Beni Shichihenge'. If non A. palmatums are included then A. griseum, A. macrophyllum, A. saccharum 'Legacy'.

    1. A large (35m tall, 2m trunk diameter), old (200 years+), rugged Acer pseudoplatanus.
    2. Acer maximowiczianum, for its softly furry leaves and splendid autumn colour.
    3. One of the snakebark maples, for the bark; not quite sure which is best, maybe Acer tegmentosum or Acer grosseri.
Sorry, but Acer palmatum definitely wouldn't feature, not any of them! A rather boring tree ;-)

My method of cheating to keep the list down to three is to only consider selections that have not been mentioned in this thread so far. All Acer palmatum:
    Beni tsukasa
    Wou nishiki
    Beni komachi
(And on the subs bench Murasaki kiyohime)
