pine tree is producing huge amounts of sap

A year ago we put in a small patio under two pine trees. Some of the surface roots were cut on one side of the trees. No problems appeared until this summer. The one tree is "bleeding" sap. Fist sized "balls" of sap are coming out of the trunk & main leader branches. Could this be from disturbing some of the roots or is this another problem altogether?

Re: pine tree is producing huge amounts of sap

It is possible that your trees have been attacked by cypress bark weevil or another borer. The trees root system has been damaged, it has gone into stress and attacked. Note. Borers only attack trees that are in stress. If you act quickly, visit your nursery asap and get root growth stimulant you might save these trees. If you start to see a browning of the leaf it may have gone to far. PS. You have a critical and primary root zone which is measured by diameter at breast height multiplied by six. No excavation should ever take place in that zone area. Good luck with it and I hope I have been helpful. Ern. (Sydney Arborist)

root hormone as suggested may help but it depends on what the problem is that is causing the stress, unless the problem can be identified its impossible to suggest a treatment plan.

If the problem is as simple as damaged roots then rooting hormone is one thing that might help (although an application of IBA isnt going to replace damaged structural roots any time soon), also consider drainage changes that might have happened with the installation of the deck, aerating or deep root irrigation may be beneficial.

Re: pine tree is producing huge amounts of sap

Thank you Paul
A local spray company guy looked at our tree yesterday...said we have an insect infestation...will know soon whether we need to remove the tree or not.
Thank you, Alice
