Put on enough to moisten entire root area, often enough to keep it moist. Poke around in the dirt and look at it if you are unable to judge situation from appearance of soil surface. Watering frequency varies with site and season. Mulching reduces water loss by shading soil, if you are having trouble keeping up and have not mulched be sure to do so.

Where abouts in OZ are you? [rough area] That can also make a difference as to watering. As Ron said MULCHING is a definate, given our water restrictions. How old are your trees?
