Outdoor plant in suitable climate, goes dormant in winter - not a house plant. If east of mountains, too cold in winter try in tub that is moved into garage or similar area in winter.

but in kelowna we get thaws and then it freezes again so the garage, not being insulated, would not be suitable. so you are saying 64 is too warm? and what about light ? i know it is a tropical plant. there is one growing in new york however. i have seen it !! in a protected area, but outside. so, back to my situation, any other suggestions ?

Not a tropical plant, therefore not suited to being grown under house plant conditions. Leaves drop in fall and spends winter in dormant, leafless condition. If garage too cold then will have to use some other intermediate area, where dormancy is not broken but temperatures do not fall too low for it to come through undamaged.
