Hedge Help in Salmon Arm

Hello,

Question for the pro's =)

We just purchased a property in Sorrento just outside Salmon arm . Along the rear of the lot is a large built up hill with a fence on top which has enough room ( about 4 - 5 feet ) for a large hedge . The fence is old and ugly so we would like to patch up the holes and then hide it with the hedge. Id lik ethe hedge to grow to about 7 - 10 feet.

What would be the best hedge to use ? Prefere something evergreen and fast growing .

What should we do to prep the area for the hedge and what time of year would be best to plant it ?

Here are a couple pics that show the length of the fence etc. Its about 260 ft long.

Since there are arborvitae (Thuja) growing wild on the site it would seem some of these very popular hedging plants would be suitable. Smaller- or slower-growing garden selections can be used in place of the typical tall native T. plicata, either cultivars of that same species or one or more of numerous T. occidentalis selections.

Since this is a 260' run you might want to mix it up a little, with a variety of plants rather than have a single row of one kind producing a highly artificial and conspicuous effect. Also, if part of the hedge does not do as well as the rest, develops more slowly this will stand out if the whole hedge started as one item planted at the same size. With a less formal, mixed planting such variations in growth do not show up as an interruption in symmetry.
