Hi, first time here and some info needed. I live on lower Vancouver Island and have about 200' that I would like to plant a portuguese laurel hedge on. Any info would be appreciated. The area is full sun planting east to west, damp in the winter, I tilled the soil yesterday and it is still a little too wet in some parts. First is this a good area for this type of hedge? Also how should I prepare the soil, when to plant, how far apart, when to start pruning, and any other info I might need. Perhaps a good supplier would be nice too. Thank you. Mark
Seeds out into woods here, as does English laurel. Part of your site may also be too damp. Check out Pacific wax myrtle instead, possibly a suitable choice. Click on 'Horticultural Techniques...' link in list for planting information. http://www.puyallup.wsu.edu/~Linda Chalker-Scott/Fact sheets.html
Thanks for the suggestions, I did a little research and I was planning to mound the laurel hedge row to get away from the dampness. I wonder if anybody has a Pacific wax myrtle hedge in the greater Victoria area that I could see. I have looked at pictures on the web, but it would be nice to see one up close.
