Re: acer tree

It should be fully hardy outdoors, if planted in the ground (don't leave it in a pot, as that will expose the roots to frost)

Re: acer tree

Thank you for your reply. My acer is in a pot as it is still quite young. How do I stop the frost getting at it?
Edie.

Re: acer tree

Bring it inside of a porch or covered area. You can wrap the pot in an isulating material. The plant does not need light once dormant, so it can be stored in a garage or shed for winter as long as it does not become too warm.

What is your coldest winter temperature and for duration dose it last? How large is the pot and what age is the maple?

Re: acer tree

What kind of maple will be relevant also, some are more hardy than others.

Edinburgh is zone 8/9 borderline, average annual winter minimum about -7, but in severe winters as low as -15 (last this low was in the 1981/82 winter). Frosts can occur at any time from now until early May, but the bulk of the winter is above freezing, typically 3 to 9.
