I will be doing this on the weekend, thinning etc.. In the past, I've just basically cut them in 1/2 or 1/4 with the spade and relocated them with varied success. Any comments on how to improve this? Thanks
I usually dig out the entire plant. Chop it in several 2 gallon size plants and replant whats left of the original in the center of the hole. Using a hatchet is a lot easier than trying to get through it with a spade and this also allows you to center the plant.

Not really they are not very tempermental. The sooner the better. It is more stressfull on the plant to do it during the growing cycle. However, I seperated mine last year in the summer and didn't lose any transplants. Make sure you plant them a little high because they will settle in an inch or two. You may want gloves and long sleeves they can cut you pretty good.
