Identifying apples - resources

  1. Re: Apple Tree question

do you have any illustrations of apple finished fruit? We have 30 apple trees of which we know only two names, McInosh and Fuji. All the others are mysteries. We are high desert Nevada (Carson area east) and this year we have a BUMPER crop. The local nuseries and AG have not been able to help us. Is there a book I could locate? or do you have illustrations I could send for? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you can do some comparisons here - honestly, this won't take you very far, though because it isn't comprehensive: http://www.nyapplecountry.com/photos.htm

But, what you will really want to track down is The Apple Book by Rosanne Sanders (ISBN: 0802225594) - 122 apple cultivars, so chances are good you'll find yours in there (although identifying apples can be difficult - the BC Fruit Testers Association identifies apples for the public here at UBC's Apple Festival and usually require a few apples from each tree because of variations in colour).

Below is a link that has a poster that may
come in handy. Sometime I will get one
of these full sized posters for myself as
I have been tantalized by it for too long.

Just click Poster / Affiche and let the page
    with the poster load in.

Apples of North-Eastern America / Pommiers du Nord-Est de l'Amérique

    Jim

    An added note on 10/16.

I am not advocating people go out and buy the poster
but I have had the digital image of this poster for some
time. When we consider where else can we find that
many Apple varieties shown in a collage of photos,
then someone can better understand the value of this
    work.
