Plant with red spikes

    These are 2 photos of plants that I believe are a type of grass. They were growing low to the ground in among other grasses or weeds. They were in an open area that is often mowed in an opening with forest of trees around the opening. Also close to a nearby creek. All this in a wildlife sanctuary in Russellville, Arkansas USA. Photos taken 10-24-10. Thanks for any ID help!!!

    A Polygonum or Persicaria species.
