Can you help me identify this fruit?

    This grows on a tree just across the road from me. It's a little more than 1" in diameter. Tastes kind of like a plum, but not as sweet. And compared with a plum, the texture is more solid and dry. It's growing on a tree with green ovoid-shaped leaves. As you can see, the seeds are brown.
