Plant is very milky, almost a hollow stem. The flower head is round. Both the flower and the leaves are a little fuzzy. The flower head is about 2 1/2" across. overall height of the plant is about 21/2 -3 ' and were found within 20 feet of it in very sandy soil near the lake. Anyone have any idea what it is?
Looks like an asclepias of some sort; apt you'd describe it as 'milky': common name is 'milkweed' (with various prefixes depending on species). Someone else here will doubtless know what species.
Looks like Asclepias speciosa, showy milkweed . If so, apparently it's poisonous. Some discussion here www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=7730
