Looked like a sunflower but...stalk and broad smooth-edged leaves are silky to the touch, clusters of tiny buds with seeds inside, the odd one opened, faint cirtrus scent on leaves and buds, leaves draped downward in the beginning. Anyone?
Sorry Marian, I am sure that Abutilon theophrasti sounds like gobbledy-goop if you are unfamiliar with Latin names, but it will lead you to good info if used to search. Togata filled in a couple of common names. Here is a Wikipedia entry that gives more info about the plant. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abutilon_theophrasti This is a seriously invasive pest in cropland in N. America (and probably elsewhere). Pretty good guess though, eh?
Eric, you are a mensch, a man among men---a scholar and gentleman, and a shining example to us all. A Forums Administrator for the ages! As Mike Myers and Dana Carvey used to shout (in character as Wayne and Garth, respectively) on SNL's "Wayne's World": "WE'RE NOT WORTHY!!!" (Applause and cheers, off.)
