We planted a yellow magnolia tree about 4 seasons ago in our vegetable garden which we converted to a perenial garden. It is in full sun. Last summer it had quite a growth spurt. Many of the bottom leaves turned brown, dried up and fell off. The local garden centre said it was probably because of the hot summer we were having. We also added mulch to the garden in the summer.
This year (after a very mild winter especially January) the buds on the lower branches turned brown and did not come out in bloom. There are no leaves on these lower branches.
The leaves on the rest of the tree seem fine and there are 2 places on the truck where leaves have come out.
Do you know what the problem is and how do we correct it?
    Thanks

Bottom leaves only falling off is typical for drought stress (or sometimes root rot). Same condition may perhaps have caused part of top to die, thus dead branches this year. Keep it moist during dry periods. Keep mulch off of stem. Do not dig among roots.
