Here are some pics of the damage.

Is it an animal like a squirrel or rabbit or is it a insect pest?

It looks like wind damage. Roses can tear their leaves on their own thorns.

I just looked up wind damage on leaves and I think thats it thanks for the help. :)
I was wondering if it was a pest or not. I looked at my books and at websites but the damage didn't match any pest.

Also I just looked at some of the other plants around my yard that get blown around by the wind too. They show the same damage pattern.

Good! There's nothing that can be done about it, anyway. I must admit, I didn't believe my mother when she told me about it, many years ago, but I've seen it in my own garden now and haven't found any other explanation.
