In The Garden: What is it???

    I need help with identifying a plant. Not sure I can upload a pic here, but if I can I surely will. Thanks for all your help. It is about 5 inches tall as of right now. The stem has no other leaves on it and is red in color. It is also soft to the touch.

    Could it be a gymnosperm, like maybe a pine seedling...?

    I see that my knowledge of this genus is sadly limited!

    My first thought was Adonis, but I went with peony because of the flower bud scales. Today I happened to see Adonis in bloom and bud at the University of Washington Medicinal Herb Garden, and have therefore returned to Adonis. I think you will find your plant belongs to this genus.
