Did it eat the catapiller? I noticed we both grow the same weeds as well !

Here are some pictures showing an unbelievably resilient 'seiryu.' It is the first tree I ever planted, and I made almost every mistake possible - too much sun and wind, too wet, poor soil, and too much fertilizer. When it dropped its leaves I assumed it was dead, dug it up and threw it back in the container. Much to my surprise it sprang back to life a few weeks later. It is now planted in a shadier, less windy, better-drained location and seems very happy.

    Acer palmatum 'Seiryu'

Vertrees, in Japanese Maples 3rd Ed., writes of Seiryu: "The foliage is a pleasing bright green. Each leaf is lightly tipped with reddish tones as it unfolds in the spring. The color soon changes to a uniform light green, though later in the summer on exposed leaves, the reddish tones reappear on the margins. Fall colors are quite spectacular and range from strong gold to light yellows with a suffusion of crimson in most leaves."

There are currently three specimens in our collection, two of which have lovely tones from the violet spectrum in their autumn collage of color. Photographs: the first was taken in August 2001; the next two in November 2003; the last three in October and November 2005.

This tree is in quite a shady location, where the light green foliage is very pretty against the dark green Douglas Fir foliage. It still gives us a great fall show, late.

This is a favourite specimen--it does not dissappoint in any season and fits nicely into compact spaces. Here is our seiryu in all it's fall glory:

Does anyone know the ultimate maximum size of this cultivar? I need to size a planter and structural components...

More changes. I like the muddy red and bronze colours of Seiryu...especially when there's sunlight scattering around those branches makes Seiryu look graceful and Japanese.

I enjoyed looking at my Seiryu maple from the kitchen window than my coral bark maple, Sango kaku. Both of them suffer from leave scorch in summer, but because Seiryu is red in colour - you barely noticed leave scorch. I'm not sure what's the name of this red. Maybe it's orange red? light red? or smoky red?

Although Seiryu looks nice say maybe 1 meter away from the tree - but in close up I don't like the suffusion colours on the leaves. I prefer a steady flow of red color instead.

I really hope my maple can achieve that reddish color similar to tlpenner's post dated on February 13th, 2007.

An update on my Seiryu in Spring (October,2007). I totally adore this spring color - light green which looks very serene and graceful. These two photos were taken in a rainy day. The weight of the rain makes the leaves to cascade a bit.

Usually in the summer time it turns into a muddy green color (not my favorite colour), and the tree would loose most of it's leaves due to the summer heat.

    Re: My Seiryu in fall

I have a series of spot lights under the second one (front yard) and the tree looks amazing at night with the lights on. . .I'll try to take a shot and post it.

Very nice , a night photo sounds interesting. 'Seiryu' seems to develop attractive trunk forms.
