Re: balcony garden novice seeks wisdom

I would like to grow some tomatoes on my northside balcony. It gets about 3 hours of sun in a.m. in one small corner. Any hope?

Also blooming plants that like nearly all shade?

Bgmother, tomatoes need at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun.

Blooming plants that come to mind that like shade and are annuals:
    Torenia - wishbone flower

Imaptiens - so many colors to choose from.

Begonia - especially the tuberous begonia puts on a nice show. Here's the tuberous begonia.

Oxalis - shamrock. I grow mine indoors in pots all year round.

Browallia - I think these also come in white.

    Colorful leaves:

Coleus - not grown for it's flowers but it's colorful leaves. Best grown with flowers pinched off as they live longer. Click on '1115 Pictures' on top of this page.

Caladiums also have colorful leaves and are fun to grow. You can purchase the plants or the corms and plant them.

I'm sure others will have more ideas. If you do mailorder be sure to check references here.
