Opss, I did it again! It should be the violet dendrobium anosmum orchid that I included and not the desert rose. So here's the desert rose.

Here are my contributions to the photo of the day. These are some of my favourites....the one tree carving is found in Alaska. Another tree carving was found in a Toronto city park in 2005. The posies was taken on the cliff of one of the Gulf Islands and the crabapples are from Bozeman Montana. I also included a couple of my 'poor tree' photos.

Don't know if you're still posting reader subscriber posts but here's an alright photo of a Calypso bulbosa that I took in the Columbia River Gorge near the Bonneville dam on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Back to my passion -- cycads!

Attached are photos of cycads taken at the garden of well-known cycad enthusiast and cycad tour director, Jeff Chemnick, in Santa Barbara, California, several years ago. This garden was since eradicated during one of the fire-storms in the area, although I understand that, in true cycad fashion, many of the older plants are coming back. Cycads are survivors, which is why they have been around for 250 million years!

Photo: Encephalartos ferox, from Africa, known for its bright orange cones.

The plant here is Marcetia macrophylla, one of some 30 species in the genus, family Melastomataceae. The thickened (and rather succulent) and densely pubescent leaves are defenses against dessication. This species inhabits open, rocky slopes and flats called campo rupestre in the central Brazil plateau region. Campo rupestre ('rocky field') is one of a variety of habitat types in the Cerrado Physiographic Province, varying from grasslands to forest. The Cerrado is one of the most species-rich yet most threatened botanical provinces in South America; but most of the Cerrado has been converted to cropland and pastureland. Photos taken in Chapada Diamantina park, Bahia state.

A photo of my topiary Pinky Winky paniculata hydrangea.
It lives in a large container on a NW facing balcony in Vancouver, BC.
The stems are upright and very strong, so the panicles do not droop.
Fades from white to this intense reddish-pink.
    I love this cultivar.

I would like to send you a picture from my garden -- it's Nerine bowdenii blooming right now. (But I don't know how to upload the photo.) I think you'll like it! Jacqueline Hohmann, master gardener
