I would like a red oak outside my cabin, but I can't decide which of them. There aren't many who can stand the climate where I live but Northen red oak (quercus rubra), Pin oak (quercus palustris) and Scarlett oak (quercus coccinea) should be hardy enough. Which one do you prefer? None is native here, but Northen red oak is sometimes used as a street tree. I really like it, but in pictures Scarlett oak is even more attractive whith its deeply lobed leaves. It also seems they all grow quite fast and has got brilliant fall color.
