Two of these little plants popped up in the road in front of our ranchhand's house. They are about 6 to 10 inches tall, white flowers with maroonish colored stamens. The flowers and leaves have a strong pepper scent and some are developing small pepper-looking pods. They do not resemble any pepper plants that I've ever seen! Thanks! Sandy

Cleome serrulata? Couldn't find any reference to a peppery smell, or pictures with the notched petals though, so maybe not. Harry

I think you're right about this being Cleome serrulata. I did some research with the name & came up with lots of interesting info, and pictures that match my puny little plants! It is also known as Rocky Mountain Beeweed, "stinking clover" (thus the strong odor, also described as skunky!) & is native to this area. Apparently, it was also medicinal for Native Americans, despite it's odor. I had NEVER seen this plant before and appreciate the quick ID!
    Thanks Harry!
