Living in an apartment in Toronto I grow plants in (large) containers. A hardy kiwi plant, purchased 15 years ago, produced lots of foliage as the vines grew along a trellis. Last growing season the vine did not survive the winter (no growth on the vine), however, plants (lots!) shooting from the roots. This summer the same, if not more plants - self seeding I am assuming as I admit I know very little about kiwi trees.
How do I proceed from here to best manage the plants and continue/maximize their growth?

Addendum: Originally I purchased 2 hardy kiwis - male, female I was told - however they were not clearly marked. One plant was lost after the second winter. I am not sure whether I have a male or female plant.

    Thanks for any suggestions,
