We've finally contoured the area behind our garage and it's ready for planting. The area is about 25 x 15 feet, sloping, north-facing and about 25 percent covered by a balcony (20 feet up), so it's pretty dry. There is one downspout that I can use to redirect gutter water into the area, if I can figure out how.

What to plant? I think most shade-loving plants also love water, so there may not be too many options. Oh, and I want things that are edible, too!

Welsh poppies, bigroot geraniums, lily of the valley, and bluebells come to mind. And hostas. Lettuces on the front edge might work in spring.

Dunno about edible, but I am fond of lungwort (Pulmonaria).
