Some of the most brilliantly-coloured flowers of Chile belong to the Portulacaceae group of plants and include numerous species of calandrinea, cistanthe and montiopsis. The montiopsis are also often interesting because of the varied attachments to the seed pods. One of the rarer of the montiopsis, at least in my experience, is Montiopsis sericea. This is a beautiful plant with linear grey-green foliage and magenta flowers. The seed pods are coated with long silky hair that glistens in the sunlight.
