I realize this can be a rather dumb question but i am trying to find out how to measure a pot.
When people talk about 4".....5" 20" pot do you measure accross the diameter or from top to bottom of the pot?

I believe they are referring to the diameter.

Of course the depth and shape of the pot can make a big difference as well. Tall narrow pots will be better for plants that like moist conditions and shallow wide pots are better for plants that like dry conditions. This has to do with the meniscus of the pots water table and possibly surface evaporation.

This is not a stupid question at all. I think members may have some comments on the best type and size of pots to use for planting.
