Hi I am new here. I have been an avid gardener in Vancouver for decades. We will be moving into an 8th floor condo at UBC in August, and I want to get a head start on my new (different) condo balcony garden by potting a few things and nurturing them over the summer. I have purchased two of the newer clematis varieties that have just come on the market, and a large fiberglass pot and trellis. My question is what to use as a growing medium. I have read many recommendations on another forum for "Al's gritty mix" which would be a complete change for me as it has no soil. But it sounds like it works well with water control etc. I would be most appreciative of any suggestions. I am planning to put the plants on a southwest facing balcony. Has anyone in the Vancouver area used the gritty mix? If it is not the right medium, what would you use? Weight is of course an issue. Thanks! Tekla
