    G'Day,

I have read some information and checked out a few links relating to the different techniques for air layering. I have this A.P Seiryu and I would like to air layer the lower branch as it is growing awkwardly towards the front of the tree. It is now winter in Sydney Australia and I was looking for your advice as to when I should do it? I was contemplating using wire as apposed to cutting and I was wondering how to do it properly and what your recommendations would be. Does anyone have any clear pictures showing in detail how and what to do? What is the general consensus, should I use a modified pot with loose soil or should I use a ball of sphagnum moss wrapped in plastic then wrapped in foil? Or is there an even better method? A clear step by step guide as to how you have done it successfully would be greatly appreciated should you have the time to write one. Pictures would also help because as they say a good picture is worth a thousand words :) Your assistance is greatly appreciated. I bought this tree and planted it when my son was born and to successfully grow another one from it would be special and I could even use it to bonsai. Thanks in advance :)

    Hi,

These links should be of help:

    http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/airlayer.htm

    http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/ornamentals/airlayer/airlayer.html

You can use wire to wound the branch rather than straddling the bark. Use an appropriate gauge copper bonsai wire, wrap it around the branch and twist it so it's tight enough to choke off nutrient flow. Both my father and cousin who do bonsai use different techniques. My father cuts the bark and my cousin uses the wire method. Do a search on air layering in this forum as we discussed this before and I plan to add to that thread later when I do my air layer soon.

    Hope this helps,

    Layne

    Layne,

Thanks for the links they have been very helpful and you saved me some time.

It is winter now here in Sydney so I won't attempt my first air-layer until early August I'll post pics then.

Good luck for when you do yours and I look forward to seeing some pics if possible.
