I grow these at my winter home in Baja, MX but have also grown them on the southwest Washington coast, zone 8. On the coast I grew them in a container which sat out all winter and they still came back each year. The blooms don't last long but they're spectacular, so you'll want to plant a good sized group of them. I know there are wide variations in climate in New Mexico so it's possible that it just hasn't warmed up enough where you are for yours to put on good growth.
