    Bioblitz!

While the main importance of Bioblitzes is to provide inventory and documentation of the lifeforms in a given area, for recognition of diversity and for long term or short term protection of same and related purposes … most folks don’t realize the enormous opportunity these events present for accessing the knowledge of experts in the regional flora and fauna. This kind of information and opportunity is usually only available formally and at a price, eg. university events and courses.

Bioblitzes charge small or zero admission, and offer a unique opportunity to interact with the experts and their subjects in situ in nature places, in a relaxed informal atmosphere. You can ask the kind of questions that the internet can’t answer, and further, be exposed to new ideas and questions that widen one’s world.

For those who attend bioblitzes regularly, this is a best-kept secret, as it can be very nice when things are small. However I believe the word should be spread and more folks welcomed to attend. My hope is that more bioblitzen will be spawned, the diversity of more areas will be explored, celebrated and protected.

Bioblitzes in B.C. include Metchosin, Sunshine Coast, Whistler, Burnaby Lake, Stanley Park, Echo Lake, Harrison HotSprings, Flathead River, Porteau Cove, Cheam Lake, West Creek wetlands, Burnaby Mountain and others. A bit of googling/bing/duckduckgo-ing will provide lots of information on future and past events.
