Identification: Strange parasitic mushroom - interesting

    These didn't look at all edible to me but I took photos of them as I'd never seen mushrooms like these growing on a healthy tree trunk before. Any idea what they are?

    They look like an Armillaria species to me. I'd like to see a spore print on them, and i'm really curious what kind of tree they are on. And sorry but it's no longer a healthy tree.

    Tree looks to be Tsuga heterophylla. And yes, probably dead by now.

    Wow! You're right I believe it was a western hemlock or Tsuga heterophylla.
