Ditto to Carya cordiformis (Bitternut Hickory); if not that, then Carya illinoinensis (Pecan).

I ruled out Pecan. The fruit is more elongated and has the raised ridges right to the top, while Bitternut has wings that only extend to the middle.Pecan leaves are distinct in having 11-15 leaflets per leaf ,while Bitternut has only 5-7.Pecan nuts are delicious, whereas Bitternut 's other common name is Pignut!!!!I hope this helps.

You should have other Hickory species about, Shagbark for instance....they are much better to eat than Bitternut.

Haven't seen any, will keep an eye out though. My dad has a Walnut tree, but did yeild much this year, and the squirrels got them.. Maybe better luck next year, with some pruning perhaps the tree will have a better crop next year.
