I meant to post about this last season but as the Maple is about to bud I better figure out what to do about this now. I have an Acer Shirasawanum Aureum (Full Moon) that is growing rather oddly. I planted it last season, and it seemed like it focused all its effort into two branches, and weirdly to me, a newbie that knows nothing, the leaves on these branches were totally different than the leaves on the rest of the tree. I don't know anything about Maple trees or pruning trees in general, but I figure I got to prune these out of place branches somehow. What is going on and what should I do about it? Here are some photos from October of last year. Two big branches. Notice the different type of leaves.
Prune it all the way down to where it popped out. That's the "undesirable" root stock plant trying to recover and take over. Pretty much knock anything under the graft line off.
Yes get rid of those green leaved branches immediately. As said previously, that is the rootstock sending out branches. If left unchecked it will take over the tree and the desirable grafted portion will most likely die off.
