Just thought I'd share a trial I did...When grafting small scions I usually have to resort to using the slanted '8 point' method.This year I had several very thin rootstocks so thought I'd try the traditional upright method with these small scions,mating the cambium totally both sides of graft.Surprisingly they worked well,shown here with a Biro(Bic)insert for scale,I could probally go smaller but feel this is about the limit with the 3mm rubber bands I use. With just a 2mm caliper rootstock stump to snip off they should make a neat graft at a young age,possibly useful(perhaps already practiced)to the Bonsai fraternity,as I do find grafting at soil level awkward&tedious.Not sure if they'll grow as quickly as a larger rootstock,however I wonder if a fair proportion of the root system is made initially redundant with side grafting anyway.
