Does any one know what the minimum soil depth would be to grow a needle palm or trachycarpus (takil or fortunei) . I ask this because I'm wondering if it would be safe to plant one of these near a septic tank (about 2 ft under ground). I could always add more soil on top if required to make soil deeper.

    Thanks :)

It shouldn't be an issue for the Needle Palm but might
be for the Trachycarpus. Many moisture tolerant plants
will self-prune their roots at the saturated soil level.
A tall Trachy could windthrow if not deeply rooted.

yes, the roots of Trachycarpus fortunei are pile growing, it goes (and has to go) very deep into the ground.

Two feet of depth would in no way be sufficent. Initially yes, ultimately no.
    Cheers, LPN.
