Big Leaf Maple grafted to Japanese Maple= smaller tree?

    If I grafted a big leaf maple to a japanese maple rootstock will it keep it a small tree or will the big leaf maple grow to its regular size.

    Neither - it will die. You can't graft maples from different genetic groups onto one another. Only members of the Palmata group (which does not include Big Leaf) may be grafted with each other.
