Hi, We saved several grape cuttings from an old house being torn down here in South Burnaby. For now they are outside in a bucket of water. Can anyone give us advice on when to plant these cuttings - should we do it now or should we wrap them in plastic and put in the fridge to keep them cool unitl next February or March? Many thanks! Gloria
Put them in right away, but don't expect a great success ratio. These are "green" as opposed to "dormant" cuttings, and the greatest threat is their drying out. The foliage will continue to transpire moisture, while the roots have not yet developed. Cut off most of the leaves, mist very frequently, protect from direct sunlight and wind, sometimes a cloche will help... and hope or pray as you wish. Look at this site: http://www.bunchgrapes.com/cuttings.html Near the bottom. Ralph
Ralph Thanks for sharing the bunchgrapes.com site info. The trays mentioned therein may be good for growing from cuttings other plants such as figs too.
