Have a patch of these in the backyard ...

    The red-flowered ones are poppies - looks like Papaver spp. to me. The purple ones look like Vetch (Vicia spp.)

    are they an illegal plant?

    Last time I checked poppies were legal - it's producing opiates from them that causes problems; vetch can be invasive, though. To that point, so can poppies, if you're not diligent about deadheading them.

    Personally? If you find them to be beautiful, leave them be. If not, cut 'em down.

    I agree they are very pretty flowers. If no harm in keeping them.. I'm gonna let them be.

    Shirley poppies so the opium concern unwarranted. Opium poppies are illegal despite being frequently sold to and grown by the general public.
