Does anyone know what kind of Eucalyptus tree would be the fastest growing in order to fill in borders of garden area as soon as possible. How big does it get and how fast does it grow. This is for Nanaimo, central Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Thanks a lot.

You might try using Eucalyptus gunnii (the Cider gum). This species hails from Tasmania and is almost hardy in southern coastal BC, although it can get killed in one of those freak bad winters we seem to get every 10-15 years.

This species is locally available and after a couple of years will grow about 4-6 ft. per year. To get the effect you want plant several at the back of your border, allowing them to grow for a couple of years so that a strong root system is established.

In year 2 or 3 cut them down in early April, leaving stumps about six inches high. From here will sprout numerous shoots which will soon get up to about 6ft by the end of the summer. The following spring you can repeat this process as needed to keep young shoots coming strong from the base of the plants. This method of pruning is called "coppicing", and is very effective with Eucalyptus. The juvenile foliage of E. gunnii is very attractive - rounded and silvery blue, and would make a lovely foil for your borders as well as providing material for flower arrangements. Good luck!
