Now that my asparagas is in the fern stage, should I break off the tops of the plant. They are always in the way. Does the plant get nutrition from the sun?

If you want Asparagus in the spring you have to nurture it through the summer. The plant requires its stems and leaves to photosynthesize sugars that are stored in the roots for healthy plump shoots next spring. A little fertilizer & occasional watering will also help out.

The fern vegetation is quite attractive. I use to grow my asparagus in a round bed on the front lawn, and many people walking past had an interest in that "pretty fern".
