How do you prune this tree to give it nice shape. Currently at 20 foot height with 6in diameter truck. I have pruned a few weak branches, but nothing else. I was thinking of waiting until fall then prunning back the branches to give it shape. Am I on the right path?

What I've heard said is that you should not prune ornamental cherries. Plant them where there's room for them to grow into their shape. Pruning just invites disease.

I don't know if it's that simple, or it's time for me to be learning some complexity here.

Pruning out a few small weak branches won't hurt, but best not to do any major pruning, as cherries don't take well to it.

A photo of the tree would help with suggestions.

PS spellcheck: 'Kanzan' (the 'w' is a common nurserymans' error)

Don't shorten main branches, this will spoil it.
