I have a Kwanzan Cherry tree in my backyard. My husband and I planted it a few years ago.
It seems that the tree has never grown since then and leaves were falling since early summer. we could not find any good site of taking care of this tree, so we have no clue what to do. Should I prune them now(early fall) to make it grow? What kind of fertilizer do I need?

Possibly the planting site is too moist. Cherry trees are often touchy about drainage. It seems this could account for the premature defoliation, lack of vigor and bare sections. The light color of the leaves could be due to excess soil moisture or to infertility - in either case the foliage is not being adequately supplied with soil minerals due to conditions at the root.

Cutting trees back reduces subsequent overall top growth. When a tree is struggling, whacking it back does nothing more than add to its troubles.
