Arbutus: Pests Eating My Madrone Leaves

Discussion in 'Ericaceae (rhododendrons, arbutus, etc.)' started by Billy, Jun 14, 2004.

  1. Hello,
I have a 3 year old madone I have raised since a seedling. There is some pest eating some of the leaves - It looks like a catapiller attack but I have never seen one around the tree. I know that the madrone is a tempermental plant and I do not want to kill it. Is there a known bug that likes to attack madrone leaves. If so is there a safe, non-toxic fix - ie Spray, other bug, powder.

    THanks for any advice

  2. catarpillars are the culprits of leaf eating, keep in mind they are hungary aswell and the meaty evergreen broad leaf is fantastic meal for the little creatures. They will be found in your tree in the morning or evening when moisture content seems to be at its daily highs.

Consider introducing another animal that will feast on the pillars. and they may voluntarily leave. (Racoon)
