Persimmon in Toronto

Discussion in 'Fruit and Nut Trees' started by TreeGardener, Oct 10, 2004.

  1. May I know whether it is possible to grown a Persimmon
Tree in Toronto? I have web-searched and found only US based
Nurseries selling Persimmon and am thinking of purchasing
one to plant. However, I am unsure whether the Fuyu will survive our Zone 6-6A?
    Thank you

    Hi TreeGardener:

Yes, you can grow a Fuyu in Toronto. You are
near borderline for coolness so you will have
to take some measures to protect this tree from
cool winds but especially the cold ground. Plenty
of moist humus and/or wood chips (bark) placed
on top of the soil and with some humus applied
with soil around the roots at planting should help.
You will want to plant this tree where it can get
as much sun light as possible where you are, yet
somewhat protected from any real cold winds.

    Jim
