Would simply breaking off one of the vines at a node near the base of the plant and then placing the first 5-6 nodes after the break in water be sufficient to get root growth (the cutting wasn't treated with any rooting hormone)?

not sure, i think this particular plant would root better if placed in soil rather than water.

Sounds good. I gave the cutting to my mother and if it doesn't root I'll break off another from mine and get it in some rooting hormone and planted for her. Thanks.
